Christmas Activities in Charleston, SC

There's something special about Christmas in Charleston. The historic streets are decorated with garlands and wreaths, the palm trees get wrapped in twinkling lights, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate without needing a winter coat.

Whether you live here, are visiting for the holidays, or are thinking about making Charleston home, I've put together some fun Christmas activities around the Lowcountry. Some are longtime local traditions, while others are special events worth adding to your calendar.

1. Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park

When: November 13–December 31, 2026, nightly from 5:30–10 p.m.

The Holiday Festival of Lights is one of Charleston's most recognizable Christmas traditions.

Located at James Island County Park, this event features a three-mile drive through more than 750 illuminated displays. And there's more to do once you park!

You can enjoy a holiday train ride, roast marshmallows, browse gift shops, and check out the giant sand sculpture. Santa visits are also part of the festivities on scheduled dates.

If you plan to go on a weekend or closer to Christmas, allow extra time for traffic and check the park's admission calendar before heading out.

2. Aquarium Aglow at the South Carolina Aquarium

When: Select nights November 20–December 31, 2026

The South Carolina Aquarium puts its own Charleston spin on the holiday season with Aquarium Aglow.

During this event, the aquarium transforms into a colorful holiday experience with immersive light displays, seasonal treats, festive photo opportunities, and even Scuba Claus diving in the Great Ocean Tank.

It's a fun alternative to traditional outdoor Christmas lights, especially if you want something a little different.

3. Charleston Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting

When: Sunday, December 6, 2026

One of the nicest ways to celebrate the season is to head downtown for Charleston's annual holiday festivities.

The City of Charleston has scheduled its Holiday Parade for 3 p.m., beginning on Broad Street and continuing along Meeting Street toward Calhoun Street.

Later, the Holy City Festival and Tree Lighting begins at Marion Square at 6 p.m., with holiday lights and special activities.

This is a great option if you want to experience the Christmas atmosphere downtown without buying tickets to a show.

4. Christmas Shopping at Charleston's Holiday Markets

When: Various dates throughout November and December

If you enjoy finding gifts that feel a little more personal, Charleston's holiday markets are worth exploring.

You'll find opportunities to shop from local makers and artisans, browse handmade gifts, and enjoy the decorated streets while you're out.

The Charleston area's holiday calendar includes seasonal markets downtown and around the surrounding communities. I recommend checking the listings closer to your shopping day because vendors, hours, and locations can vary.

5. A Christmas Carol at Dock Street Theatre

When: November 29–December 20, 2026

If you love a classic Christmas story, consider spending an evening at the historic Dock Street Theatre.

A Christmas Carol brings Dickens' familiar holiday tale to the stage in one of Charleston's most memorable performance settings.

It's a nice way to mix a little history and culture into your holiday plans. You could even make an evening of it with dinner downtown before the show.

6. Holiday Concerts at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

When: December 3 and December 17, 2026

For something a little different, take a look at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens' December events.

The calendar includes A Gospel Christmas on December 3 and a candlelit holiday concert by the Ethos string quartet on December 17.

These events offer a quieter way to enjoy seasonal music in a historic Lowcountry setting.

7. Take a Christmas Stroll Through Downtown Charleston

When: Throughout the holiday season

Not every Christmas activity needs a ticket or a reservation.

One of the simplest ways to enjoy the season is to spend an afternoon or evening walking through downtown Charleston.

Take your time exploring the historic streets, looking at holiday decorations, stopping for coffee, and enjoying the festive atmosphere.

If you're visiting, this is also a wonderful way to get a feel for Charleston beyond the usual tourist attractions.
